Welcome to the Wharfedale Hillwalkers!

Email hikers@hotmail.co.uk with any questions or a walk leader from the diary below. If you have a question about harder walks or longer trips then give markkillala@msn.com a shout.

This is a simple hillwalking club for under-50s living in Yorkshire areas (most of us are currently from Leeds/York area). We are a YHA-affiliated outdoors group, currently running 1-2 walks per month mainly in the Yorkshire Dales. We get small turnouts of 5-10 which is nice and friendly, and we are avoiding attracting big groups.

To join - there are no formalities, just turn up on a walk (email the walk leader few days beforehand to say hello if you want, book if necessary of course - check the walk details). Membership is £1.30 per year (what we have to pay the YHA per member, we don't have extra costs) but just catch us after 2 or 3 walks and pay then, see if you like it first. We have members who could car share in Leeds, Harrogate, Doncaster and Morley (for starters) so if you need a lift, or can offer one then pop a message on the message board.

Walks Grades

+        easy-ish - less than 8-10 miles, possibly some minor hill climbing but mostly on the flat, on good paths, generally OK in good trainers by inexperienced hikers. normally limited to evening walks.

the below walks generally require walking boots, but feel free to check with the walk leader before setting out

++       intermediate - generally more than 8 miles but not more than 15 depending on ascent, ascending some hills and using rougher paths. OK for most people who already get regular moderate exercise, in basic walking boots or other strong ankle boots.
+++     hard - longer and harder often up big hills, for reasonably fit walkers, requires good level of kit - extra spare layers, hat, extra food. Don't be put off by this, if you've enjoyed 'intermediate' walks comfortably then you should give these a try - you'll enjoy it, and you'll be looked after.
++++   very hard - severe mountain walks or very long distances in one day. Not for the inexperienced, unfit or unprepared.

Charity Walks
We publish charity walks and events details here because our members may enjoy them, and the charity may benefit. All the responsibility for safety rests with the organisers, Wharfedale Hillwalkers membership is not necessary to attend them, you need to satisfy the charity organisers' requirements instead, and we hope you enjoy them.

If you represent a charity, please contact us if you would like your charity walking event details advertised here too.
